Following notable debut EPs from Morcee and Grovestreet, London-based imprint Tight Knit are to kickstart their 2016 with Akito’s five-track ‘Pleasure Pending’ EP - the most expansive release of his career to date.
Having already forged a reputation for his quick-fire, dynamic club sets and steely, percussion-focused work for labels like Subskank and Trax Couture, Akito’s debut for Tight Knit showcases a fluid, maturing sound. The off-kilter, trickily flow on thumping opener ‘Catching Feels’ is a case in point, packing enough bass pressure to work the dance but plenty of away-from-the-club conceptualism too, while the muffled gun shots and harsh, gritty bass tones of ‘Resolutions Per Visit’ nod toward formative grime.
‘Degrade Gracefully’, a smoky, dystopian haze again showcases a different side to Akito’s sound, complete with his own Templeton Closer mix acting as a darker, club twist, while the square-wave dancehall rumblings on the gorgeously mellow ‘Codeine Claps’ offer up one final surprise.
